Man charged in shooting death of 11-year-old boy
The shooting, which happened Wednesday night on Madera Road in Batesburg, killed the girl and injured another child.
Quayshaun Clark, 29, was arrested Friday at a home in Gilbert, the Lexington County sheriff’s deputy confirmed.
Ta’shya Michelle Jay, 11, of Leesville, died from the shooting.
Ta’shya’s mother, Shandreika Jay, said she was visiting a friend and had been in the area only 10 minutes when the shooting occurred.
Jay said her daughter was in another room with one of her friends when gunfire entered the house and struck her daughter’s face.
The other girl, who was struck by the rifle shots, was transported to the hospital, but is expected to survive.
Clark, who is from Batesburg, is accused of firing a “high-profile weapon, known as a Draco, multiple times,” where the girl and her girlfriend were acquainted, Sheriff Jay Koon said.
“A social media video also showed Clark at the scene before firing,” the sheriff said.
Clark is charged with murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and discharging a weapon in an apartment.
Koon said the Community LED tips Clark, but they are still examining.
The victim’s mother said she was thrilled about the arrest, but expects there will be more.
She said she knows Clark and doesn’t think he’s a bad guy. She believes her daughter just got caught in the crosshairs of gun violence.
