Poll Results Highlight Liberal Dominance

As the federal election campaign enters its third week, a recent Ipsos poll reveals that the Liberal Party has widened its lead over the Conservative Party to a striking double-digit margin. According to the poll, conducted exclusively for Global News, 46% of Canadians surveyed indicated they would vote for the Liberals, marking a two-point increase from the previous week.

In contrast, support for the Conservatives has dropped to 34%, a decline of four points. This significant shift suggests that if elections were held today, the Liberals would likely secure a majority government.

Shifting Political Landscape

The poll also indicates that the New Democratic Party (NDP) has garnered 10% of voter support, while the Green Party and Bloc Quebecois have received 3% and 6% nationally, respectively.

Interestingly, all three parties have seen a slight increase of one point from last week. However, 7% of voters remain undecided, highlighting the fluidity of the current political landscape. The 12-point gap between the Liberals and Conservatives is notably larger than the margins observed in earlier polling, indicating a potential shift in voter sentiment as the campaign progresses.

Impact of U.S. Relations on Canadian Politics

One of the critical factors influencing voter opinions is the ongoing tension surrounding U.S. tariffs and trade relations. Liberal Leader Mark Carney has had to navigate these challenges, suspending his campaign twice to address new tariffs imposed by U.S.

President Donald Trump. Carney’s proactive approach, including meetings with Canadian premiers and discussions with Trump, appears to resonate with voters, as 45% now view him as the best choice for prime minister. This is a slight increase from the previous week, while Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has seen his support dip to 32%.

Moreover, the poll indicates that 69% of Canadians are hopeful for a majority government, emphasizing the desire for stability and continuity in governance. With nearly 90% of respondents deeming this election critical for Canada’s future, the stakes are undeniably high.

The Ipsos poll, conducted between April 1st and 3rd, 2025, surveyed 1,000 Canadians aged 18 and older, providing a snapshot of the electorate’s mood as the campaign unfolds.
