Unforgettable memories from the swamp

Kevin Bacon recently took a trip down memory lane, sharing a bizarre and shocking moment from the set of his 1998 film, Wild Things. In a video interview with Variety, Bacon recounted an eerie experience that occurred while filming in a swampy location.

He described the scene as filled with mosquitoes and the challenges of shooting near a river. It was during this shoot that an unexpected event unfolded, leaving a lasting impression on the actor.

As Bacon recalled, the crew had set up a raft to assist with lighting for the scene.

Suddenly, a voice crackled over the walkie-talkie, saying, ‘Hey, uh, I think I just saw a floater.’ To Bacon’s surprise, it was indeed a body floating by. While he laughed at the absurdity of the moment, it highlighted the strange and sometimes dark vibe of the film itself.

Behind the scenes of a cult classic

Wild Things is known for its thrilling plot twists and steamy scenes, featuring a star-studded cast including Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, and Denise Richards. The film revolves around a complex extortion scheme that unfolds under the watchful eye of Bacon’s character, a police detective.

However, as the story progresses, viewers discover that Dillon and Bacon’s characters are not as innocent as they seem.

Director John McNaughton also shared insights about the filming experience, recalling how the crew had to call the police to retrieve the body that had floated by, ensuring it didn’t disrupt their shot.

This incident was just one of many challenges faced during production, which also included a tornado that nearly destroyed several trailers on set.

A surprising script and cult status

Despite its initial reception, where many critics labeled it as ‘trash,’ Wild Things has since gained a reputation as a cult classic.

Bacon himself had a mixed reaction to the script when he first read it, describing it as ‘the trashiest piece of crap’ he had ever encountered. However, as he continued reading, he found himself surprised by the plot twists and depth of the story.

The film ultimately grossed $30 million during its theatrical run and has spawned several direct-to-video sequels. Its blend of suspense, drama, and unexpected revelations has allowed it to resonate with audiences over the years, proving that sometimes, what seems like a disaster can turn into something memorable.
