The journey of a bowling prodigy

Kerri Callahan, a junior at Kellenberg Memorial High School, is not just another student athlete; she is a bowling sensation on the verge of making history. With three consecutive Catholic High School Athletic Association titles under her belt, she is poised to become the first bowler in her league to win an individual championship every year of high school.

This ambitious goal is not just about accolades for Kerri; it’s about proving to herself that she can achieve greatness. “Just being able to prove to myself I could do it … that would be so cool,” she shared after her latest victory, where she scored an impressive 629.

From novice to varsity star

Kerri’s love for bowling ignited at the tender age of eight when a friend’s mother signed her up for a league. Fast forward to middle school, and she was already showing promise with a remarkable 190 game.

However, stepping onto the varsity squad as a freshman was a different ball game. Initially quiet and reserved, Kerri’s potential shone through during her second practice, where she outperformed many upperclassmen. Coach Ally Frisina recognized her talent early on, stating, “We knew she had something special.” Kerri’s journey from a nervous freshman to a confident competitor has been nothing short of inspiring.

Breaking records and setting goals

Last season, Kerri faced her archrival St. John the Baptist in a nail-biting title match, where she bowled a near-perfect 298, hitting 11 consecutive strikes. “It was insane. I was not expecting it,” she recalled, highlighting the pressure of the moment.

This victory not only secured her individual title but also propelled her team to a crucial win. As she prepares for the upcoming Buffalo-based tournament, Kerri feels more confident than ever, thanks to her high school’s new eight-lane bowling alley.

“I’m in here all the time,” she said, emphasizing her commitment to practice and improvement.

Aiming for perfection

As Kerri looks ahead to her senior year, she has set her sights on several ambitious goals: becoming a four-time champion, achieving her first perfect 300 game, and winning another team title. Her dedication to the sport is evident, as she practices almost daily, understanding that success requires hard work. “Bowling taught me that I definitely have to focus — that everything takes practice,” she explained. With her eyes on the prize, Kerri is determined to make her mark in the bowling world, proving that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.
