The Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club is in a precarious situation as its essential grooming equipment nears the end of its operational life. The groomer, which has served the club for 26 years, is now a relic from the last century, and its aging components are becoming increasingly unreliable.
Marshall Moleschi, the president of the club, expressed concern over the equipment’s deteriorating condition, stating, “We’ve been able to keep it going over the last couple of years, but it’s past its best due date.” This sentiment reflects the urgency of the situation as the club faces mounting repair costs and operational challenges.
Funding hurdles for essential equipment
Recently, the Kelowna Nordic Ski Club was denied a crucial $250,000 grant from the provincial government, which has left the club scrambling for alternative funding sources. John Davina, a former president of the club, highlighted the ongoing struggle, saying, “We’re limping along with this groomer right now; it’s almost every week we’re having to do repairs on it, it’s very costly.” The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport explained that the Gaming Grants Capital Program operates on a competitive basis, and the demand for funding exceeds the available resources.
This situation has put the club in a tight spot, as they need to raise additional funds to cover the expected $600,000 cost of a new groomer.
Community support and fundraising initiatives
Despite the setbacks, the Kelowna Nordic Ski Club is determined to rally community support.
Moleschi noted that they have already raised $90,000, but emphasized the need for further contributions to secure the necessary funds. “We do need our members of the community to help support this great asset for our community,” he said.
To mobilize support, the club is launching fundraising activities in February, which will be detailed on their website. These initiatives aim to engage local residents and encourage them to contribute to a cause that benefits the entire community.
The importance of the ski club to the community
The Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club is more than just a recreational facility; it serves as a vital hub for outdoor activities and community engagement. With the increasing popularity of winter sports, the club plays a crucial role in promoting healthy lifestyles and fostering a sense of community among residents. As the club navigates these funding challenges, the support from local residents will be instrumental in ensuring that it can continue to provide access to skiing and snowshoeing for years to come. The club’s commitment to maintaining its facilities and equipment reflects its dedication to serving the community and promoting outdoor recreation.
