Joe Biden Says Derek Chauvin’s Guilty Verdict Is A ‘Step Forward’
Joe Biden Says Derek Chauvin’s Guilty Verdict Is A ‘Step Forward’ For Justice In America. The President of the United States has welcomed the Minneapolis jury’s guilty verdict for Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd.
The former police officer was found guilty on all three counts and now gets up to 40 years behind bars.
Joe Biden said in an address to the nation, “The trial was hard on the Floyd family and black people across the country.”
The leader said the case has revealed the “pain [and] exhaustion that black Americans experience every day, and it has also ripped the shutter off for everyone to tear down systemic racism.”
Biden said, “Let’s be clear, such a judgment is also too rare.
“To many people it seems as if there is a unique and extraordinary convergence of factors, a brave young woman with a smartphone camera, a bunch of traumatized witnesses, a murder that takes almost 10 minutes in the light of day, to watch for the whole world ultimately.
“A jury that listened to the evidence and did its civic duty in the midst of an extraordinary moment under exceptional pressure.
“No one should be above the law, and today’s verdict sends this message, but it is not enough.
“This is not just a problem of black America or a problem of color.
“It’s a problem of all Americans,” he said.
“It holds us to the promise of liberty and justice for all. It prevents our nation from realizing its full potential.”
“We are all part of George Floyd’s legacy and our job now is to honor him and honor him.”
The murder case against Chauvin came to a close in Hennepin County Court this afternoon after going through the jury.
