Jet fuel transport workers at Vancouver airport threaten to strike, impacting air travel.

Workers on the brink of a strike

The workers responsible for transporting jet fuel to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) are preparing to strike, issuing a notice that could see them walk off the job as early as Tuesday morning. These workers, represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 502, are employed by SGS Canada and play a crucial role in ensuring that jet fuel is delivered from sea vessels to the airport.

The potential strike raises concerns about the impact on fuel delivery, which is vital for the operations of airlines and the airport itself.

Frustration over negotiations

In a statement posted on the union’s website, ILWU Canada president Rob Ashton expressed the union’s frustration over the lack of communication from the employer.

“The biggest challenge that we have right now is getting the employer back to the table,” Ashton stated. He emphasized that the employer’s reluctance to engage in negotiations is hindering progress. The union believes that the employer is intentionally delaying discussions, hoping that government intervention will resolve the situation.

Ashton pointed out that this pattern has been observed in the past year, where federally regulated employers have avoided bargaining by relying on government action.

Key issues at stake

The primary concerns driving the potential strike include wages, pensions, and improved severance packages.

Ashton highlighted the need for a living wage in Vancouver, stating, “To live comfortably in Vancouver, you need to earn a living wage of $27 an hour, but that just gets you to the bare minimum.” Many workers are currently forced to take on multiple jobs to make ends meet, underscoring the urgency of their demands for a pay increase.

The union remains hopeful that the employer will return to the bargaining table, as Ashton noted, “Without the employer at the table, there won’t be a deal.” As the situation develops, the impact on jet fuel delivery to YVR remains a critical concern for both the union and the airport’s operations.
