Jersey City police catch month-old baby thrown off second-story balcony by enraged man
Police did not release the man’s name, though he was arrested, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione told CNN. He was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
“Thank you JCPD,” Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of an officer holding the baby. “Today, JCPD received a call that a child was in danger. They responded to the call and at that time saw a male threatening to throw a baby from the second floor of the building.”
Although officers set up a negotiation perimeter, it was to no avail.
“Eventually, the male threw the one-month-old baby from the second floor of the building,” Fulop wrote. “Officers on scene reacted quickly and were able to catch the baby. Fortunately the baby was not physically harmed.”
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office singled out Officer Eduardo Matute, who caught the baby, and had praise for Officer Joseph Casey and Incident Commander Captain Michael McKerry for their “actions and bravery” in their response to the distressing situation.
The baby was transported to a local hospital and was unharmed.
“JCPD officers went above and beyond the call of duty once again, saving the life of a 1-month-old baby under extremely stressful circumstances today,” tweeted the official Jersey City account. “Thank you to all of our JCPD officers for their service.”
