Joseph Ngigi Kariuki, a former Brookdale Senior Living employee, was arrested in 2019 after sexually assaulting a 79-year-old female patient at his workplace.
Last Thursday, a Johnston County jury convicted him of the crime and sentenced him to prison.
Superior Court Judge Clair Hill sentenced Kariuki for a minimum of 20 years to a maximum of 29 years in state prison.
“The Johnston County Prosecutor’s Office is pleased with the verdict and sentence imposed. We hope this will help restore some dignity to this incredible lady whose life was filled with such tremendous love,” said Assistant Prosecutor Caitlin Slavin.
“We are now confident that this predator will never again be able to harm a member of our community.”
According to the Smithfield Police Department, officers received a call from the center shortly before 3 a.m. to investigate a sexual assault case.
The suspect at that time had already been taken into custody by a supervisor as soon as the allegations were made.
Brookdale management said, “Inappropriate conduct or behavior is never tolerated and is dealt with swiftly.”
“Our company has rigorous employment standards, including background checks, compliance with state rules and regulations, and ongoing employee training”.
