Indian girl, 19, is beheaded by her mother and brother for becoming pregnant
Indian police in the state of Maharashtra have arrested 17-year-old Sanjay Mote and his mother, Shobha Mote, for beheading her 19-year-old sister and daughter, Kirti Thore.
The young girl ran away from home after becoming pregnant. The family did not accept her boyfriend, whom she had met in college, because he was poorer than her.
Honor killing’ increasingly common in India
After some time away from home, Kirti Thore’s mother and brother asked her to visit them and she agreed.
According to BBC India, while the young woman was preparing tea in the family kitchen, the brother attacked her from behind. Then, while Sanjay Mote decapitated her, her mother held her legs.
Both took a selfie with the girl’s head and showed it to neighbors as if it were ‘honor killing’, increasingly common in India when families do not accept daughters’ partners.
Mother and son turned themselves in at the police station.
Nimit Goyal, a police official, told the Times of India that “the boy seems to have been inspired by a Marathi film. He beheaded his sister in the kitchen while she was preparing tea for him and his mother.” Both deleted the selfie from their cell phones but it has been sent for analysis.
Kirti Thore’s husband fled the family home
It appears that the victim’s husband, Avinash, was in the house at the time of the incident. He was lying in bed because he was feeling unwell. When he heard noise he ran to the kitchen but his brother-in-law attacked him and fled.
