As wildfires rage across California, a group of dedicated individuals is stepping up to rescue horses in peril. The Compton Cowboys, a nonprofit organization founded by Randy Savvy, has become a beacon of hope for these animals, showcasing the power of community and compassion in times of crisis.
Their motto, “Streets raised us. Horses saved us,” reflects their deep connection to both the urban landscape and the equestrian world.
Randy Savvy’s mission to save horses
Randy Savvy’s instinct to help kicked in as the flames approached.
“My first instinct was ‘how do I help?’” he shared, emphasizing his commitment to the cause. With a phone that quickly lit up with requests for assistance, Savvy mobilized his team to rescue horses trapped in the chaos. On one of his first nights of action, he successfully rescued six horses, demonstrating the urgency and need for intervention.
The challenges of rescue operations
Rescuing horses during wildfires is no small feat. Savvy recounted a particularly harrowing experience in Sunland-Tujunga, where he navigated through dark, closed roads to reach stranded horses. “I just drove around the road closure sign and went into the deep, dark canyon,” he recalled.
Equipped with a powerful truck and a 45-foot horse trailer, he was able to reach the animals in distress, showcasing the determination and resourcefulness of the Compton Cowboys.
The impact of community support
The Compton Cowboys have garnered a significant following, with over 190,000 supporters on Instagram.
This community engagement not only raises awareness about their mission but also fosters a sense of unity among horse lovers from diverse backgrounds. Savvy believes that horses have a unique ability to transcend social barriers, bringing people together in a shared passion.
“No matter if you’re White, Black, straight, gay, rich, poor, or whatever, you have horses, you love horses,” he said, highlighting the inclusivity of the equestrian community.
As the wildfires continue to threaten lives and livelihoods, the Compton Cowboys exemplify the spirit of resilience and compassion.
