Darriynn Brown, the 18-year-old suspected in the violent murder of 4-year-old Cash Gernon, was charged with capital murder and could face the death penalty in Texas.

The boy was discovered in the middle of a Dallas road in May after being stabbed to death after being abducted from the bed he had shared with his twin brother.

Brown had previously performed kidnapping and predatory duties, as he reportedly attempted to take a two-year-old girl in February.

The juvenile also faces a minimum life sentence and could receive the death penalty if convicted of murder in connection with the child’s death.

A Dallas Police Department spokesman said the new evidence implicates Brown in the child’s murder and the time of his death.

“Evidence sent to the lab has been returned that links Darriynn Brown to Cash Gernon at the time of his death,” the explanation said. “Therefore, she is also charged with Capital Murder.”

“It’s been almost a month since this tragedy and I’m still waiting to prepare a defense for this child,” said Brown’s attorney, Harris. “We can’t do that until we have all the evidence.”

He added: “Even if it’s believed to be [Brown] in the video, that doesn’t mean he killed the child. The world is basically hurting this whole community by saying, ‘It’s him.'”

Harris has also insisted that Brown may suffer from schizophrenia and is waiting for a doctor to put him through a mental health evaluation to see if he is competent to assist in his own defense.

Lt. Carrie Wise said, “There is no question who took [Cash] and as soon as I get the lab report, there will be no question who killed him.”

Brown remains in the Dallas County Jail with bail set at $1.625 million.
