Grandmother accused of murdering 3-year-old grandson is arrested
Angela Downing, 57, was arrested on murder charges in the death of her 3-year-old grandson, according to authorities.
Police said the incident occurred Jan. 18 when the child was in Angela’s care and had to be taken in serious condition to an area hospital.
The grandmother initially told medical personnel that the child had accidentally fallen down a flight of stairs, which caused his injuries.
The child had a skull fracture, brain swelling and bleeding.
Child Protective Services contacted police while the child was being treated at the hospital.
Investigators said Angela Downing, who was the child’s legal guardian, admitted to detectives that she had thrown the child onto the bathroom floor and into a wall.
The child died four days after being hospitalized.
Authorities also said this is a tragic reminder of how devastating child abuse can be and how the relationship between suspect and victim can vary.
