Davidson de Souza’s story is one of determination, grit, and the relentless pursuit of dreams. Growing up in a favela outside São Paulo, Brazil, he faced challenges that would deter many. Yet, his journey took a remarkable turn when he discovered the exhilarating world of bobsledding. The first time he slid down the ice at Calgary’s WinSport facility, he felt an adrenaline rush that ignited a passion he never knew existed. “It was pure adrenaline. It was everything I love,” de Souza recalls, reflecting on that life-changing moment.

Overcoming adversity

Life in the favela was tough. De Souza started working at just eight years old, helping to support his family by taking care of parked cars in exchange for coins. Despite the hardships, he was determined to rise above his circumstances. At twelve, he joined a local track program, motivated not just by the sport but also by the promise of free food after practice. This decision set him on a path to becoming an accomplished discus and javelin athlete.

His life took another turn when he was introduced to bobsledding at the age of twenty. The Brazilian team’s training in Calgary opened new doors for him, and he quickly fell in love with the sport and the country. “I got in love with the sport right away,” he said, expressing his admiration for Canada’s beauty and safety. His determination led him to compete in the 2014 Olympics as part of the Brazilian four-man bobsled team, where he was inspired by Canadian athletes.

A leap of faith

After the Sochi Olympics, de Souza made a bold decision. He sold his possessions and bought a one-way ticket to Canada, ready to chase his dreams. Arriving in Calgary, he faced culture shock and language barriers but remained focused on his goal of competing for Canada. However, the responsibilities of fatherhood led him to step away from the sport temporarily. “I just want to make sure my kids have me around as much as possible,” he explained.

Yet, the call of competition was too strong to resist. In 2021, de Souza returned to bobsledding, motivated by the desire to show his sons that dedication and perseverance can lead to greatness. His comeback was marked by success, including a bronze medal at a 2022 World Cup event and gold and bronze finishes at the North American Cup in 2023.

Aiming for the podium

As the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics approach, de Souza and the Canadian bobsled team are gearing up for a competitive season. With high hopes for a podium finish at the world championships in Lake Placid, he is optimistic about their performance. “We have a really good push this year,” he stated confidently. His journey has not only been about personal achievement but also about representing his adopted country, where he will soon become a citizen.

For de Souza, competing for Canada is a dream realized. It’s a testament to his resilience and the love he has for the country that embraced him. As he prepares for the challenges ahead, he carries with him the hopes of his family and the spirit of perseverance that has defined his journey.
