The potential Republican presidential hopeful did not elaborate on the extent of his wife’s cancer or how far the disease has progressed, though the statement struck a somber note.
“As she faces the most difficult trial of her life, she will have not only my unwavering support but that of our entire family, as well as the prayers and well wishes of Floridians across our state,” Governor DeSantis said. “Casey is a true fighter, and she will never, ever, ever give up.”
Ron and Casey DeSantis have three children together: daughter, Madison, 4; son, Mason, 3; and daughter, Mamie, 18 months.
Ron DeSantis called his wife “the centerpiece” of his family and highlighted her as an inspiration to Floridians.
“She has impacted the lives of countless Floridians through her initiatives as First Lady,” said DeSantis.
Casey DeSantis, 41, is a former champion equestrian and morning television news anchor.
Ron DeSantis is a conservative rising star in the Republican Party and is often mentioned as a possible candidate for the White House in 2024, although former President Trump would be the heavy favorite if he runs.
The Sunshine State governor’s popularity has taken a hit because of his controversial handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially during the recent surge fueled by the virulent delta variant.
DeSantis rolled back virtually all measures to limit the spread of the deadly virus and has fallen out with school districts that sought to impose facemasks on students.
