A Melbourne, Australia, father who shot his own daughter and her husband in the head to death, in part because he was not invited to their wedding, has been jailed for life in a crime prosecutors call “callous and cowardly.”
Father killed his own daughter and her husband because he was not invited to their wedding
Osman Shaptafaj, 57, appeared in the Supreme Court of Victoria on Tuesday, where he has been ordered to serve two life sentences concurrently after pleading guilty to murdering Lindita Musai, 25, and Veton Musai, 29, in the suburb of Yarraville about two years ago.
Shaptafaj will have to serve at least 35 years for the conviction, meaning he will have ninety years before he is eligible for parole. Details emerged during the Supreme Court about how the man waited for the couple for nearly two hours on New Year’s Eve before shooting them both in the head at point-blank range.
Father left bodies dumped on the porch of son-in-law’s family members
Shaptafaj left the two bodies lying on the porch of the Musai’s house – the couple resided next door – and rang the doorbell so they could be found. He then walked into the nearby grasslands where he shot himself several times as several bystanders watched. He now has a brain injury and has lost his right eye.
Shaptafaj claims he does not remember what happened. The Supreme Court went on to hear that the man believed he was trapped in a “glitch” in a first-person shooter video game set during the Cold War.
Judge Andrew Tinney: “He has taken the lives of two young men”
Judge Andrew Tinney called Shaptafaj’s crimes “cowardly.” “He has taken the lives of two young men. Your crimes were premeditated, carried out against two members of your family who legitimately should have expected you to be their protector, not someone who would kill them so savagely,” he stressed.
