A family seeks justice and answers after a young woman's tragic death in care.

The tragic death of Chantelle Williams, a young woman who was under the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development, has sparked outrage and concern among her family and the community. Williams was found unresponsive outside in Port Alberni on January 28, raising serious questions about the circumstances surrounding her care and the events leading up to her death.

Unanswered questions linger

Chantelle’s grandfather, George Nookemus, expressed his deep frustration and sorrow, stating, “I’m still wondering and asking and I never get answers from them about how she died and why she was in the hospital.” The family believes that Williams may have frozen to death, a heartbreaking possibility that underscores the urgency for answers.

Nookemus revealed that Williams had been taken from her family at the tender age of four, adding layers of complexity to an already tragic situation.

Systemic issues in child welfare

The case has drawn attention to broader systemic problems within the child welfare system.

Conservative MLA Amelia Boultbee highlighted that 103 children died while receiving services from the Ministry last year alone. She emphasized that these incidents are often treated as isolated events, ignoring the underlying issues that contribute to such tragedies. “There’s a systemic problem,” Boultbee stated, calling for immediate reforms and accountability.

Investigation and community response

In response to the family’s concerns, Usma Nuu-chah-nulth Family and Child Services acknowledged the tragedy and stated they are working closely with the Ministry to address the family’s questions. However, the final coroner’s report is still pending, leaving many details about Williams’ death unknown.

Jennifer Charlesworth, the representative for children and youth, explained that investigations into critical injuries and deaths in care cannot proceed until any criminal investigations are concluded. This bureaucratic delay has left the family in a state of limbo, yearning for closure.

Charlesworth’s office has initiated an initial review and plans to visit the Port Alberni community to engage with local service providers and the Tribal Council. This outreach aims to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding Williams’ death and to ensure that similar tragedies do not occur in the future.

As the family continues to seek answers, the community rallies around them, demanding accountability and systemic change. The tragic loss of Chantelle Williams serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by youth in care and the urgent need for reform in the child welfare system.
