Transforming the Enoch Cree Nation

The Enoch Cree Nation, located just west of Edmonton, is set to undergo a significant transformation thanks to a recently secured $100 million loan. This funding, announced during a press conference at the River Cree Resort and Casino, is aimed at enhancing essential services and fostering economic growth within the community.

Chief Cody Thomas emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “It is about ensuring our members have access to the essential services they deserve.” This initiative is not just about infrastructure; it represents a commitment to the long-term prosperity of the Enoch Cree Nation.

Key Projects and Economic Impact

The loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) will facilitate the construction of several vital facilities, including an elders facility, a cultural center, and a medical center. These developments are projected to unlock over $1 billion in commercial and residential opportunities, significantly impacting the local economy.

The First Nations Finance Authority is also contributing to this growth, providing $194 million in financing for the expansion of the River Cree Resort and Casino. This multifaceted approach to development is designed to create jobs, support local businesses, and provide housing for community members.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Future Prospects

In addition to the major projects funded by the recent loan, the CIB has previously approved a $15 million loan for upgrades to the main transportation artery within the Enoch Cree Nation. This includes improvements such as pedestrian crossings and a new pedestrian trail, which are essential for enhancing connectivity and safety within the community.

Ehren Cory, CEO of the CIB, highlighted the importance of these investments, stating, “Our second investment with the Enoch Cree Nation supports its ongoing work to develop their reserve and create a self-sustaining future for community members.” With construction expected to be completed by 2027, the Enoch Cree Nation is on a path toward a vibrant and sustainable future.
