Fire incident in Winnipeg

In the early hours of Sunday morning, a vacant home in Winnipeg was engulfed in flames, prompting an emergency demolition order due to extensive damage. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to the scene located in the 200 block of Austin Street North, near Main Street in Point Douglas.

Firefighters arrived to find the structure compromised, necessitating a defensive approach to combat the blaze safely.

Challenges faced by firefighters

Fire crews faced not only the raging fire but also the harsh winter conditions that made their task even more daunting.

With temperatures plummeting, the ground around the property became icy and treacherous, complicating their efforts. The fire service reported that the extreme cold forced crews to rotate frequently to avoid exhaustion from the biting temperatures. Despite these challenges, firefighters managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.

Significant damage and future steps

While no injuries were reported during the incident, the damage to the home was severe. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service confirmed that the building suffered extensive smoke, fire, and water damage, leading to the decision for emergency demolition.

This was not the first incident at this location; crews had previously responded to a fire at the same house last March. Neighbors in the vicinity have been advised to exercise caution as the water used to extinguish the fire has frozen, creating hazardous conditions in the area.
