Winter storm hits Edmonton
As a low-pressure system sweeps across Alberta, the Edmonton region is experiencing a significant winter storm, with forecasts predicting 10 to 15 cm of heavy snow. This weather event has prompted city officials to declare a Phase 1 parking ban on all major roads, effective Thursday, December 19, at 7 a.m.
The ban is expected to last between three to five days, depending on the efficiency of snow-clearing operations.
Understanding the parking ban
During the Phase 1 parking ban, snow-clearing crews will focus on arterial roads, collector roads, bus routes, and areas within business improvement zones.
This means that parking is prohibited in these designated areas until the roads are fully cleared. However, residents can still park on residential streets that are not designated as bus routes. It’s important for motorists to be aware that vehicles parked on hills along major roads may be ticketed starting at 7 a.m.
on December 19.
City’s response and safety measures
Val Dacyk, the general supervisor of infrastructure field operations, emphasized the need for the parking ban due to the blowing and drifting snow causing significant accumulation throughout Edmonton. “We ask motorists to clear parked vehicles from major roadways, bus routes, and those roadways indicated as seasonal ‘no parking’ routes,” Dacyk stated.
The city has assured residents that crews and equipment will work around the clock until the Phase 1 roads are clear. Once the initial phase is completed, further announcements may follow regarding a potential Phase 2 parking ban affecting residential and industrial roads.
Weather forecast and safety tips
According to Environment Canada, the snowfall is expected to intensify throughout Wednesday, particularly in central and southern Alberta, before tapering off in the evening. Residents are advised to stay updated on the Roadways Snow Clearing Map for the latest information on road conditions and clearing status.
It’s crucial for everyone to prioritize safety during this winter storm by avoiding unnecessary travel and ensuring that parked vehicles do not obstruct snow-clearing efforts.
