Dog collapses and dies after being ‘scared to death’ by fireworks
Judith and Malcolm Watson’s dog, Dexter, was shaking and cowering as fireworks went off around their home in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, reports Teesside Live .
Just after 6pm, a huge explosion sent Dexter running out of the room and when Judith found him, the terrified dog had collapsed in the downstairs bathroom.
“I thought he was shaking at first, but he was lying on the floor,” said Judith, 63.
“Then I realized he was gone. I don’t know exactly where dogs’ hearts are, but I tried pressing on his chest and blowing into his mouth.”
Every Friday, Dexter walked with Malcolm, 67, to a fish and chip store where he bought a sausage.
But they had to keep him inside on Friday as it was bonfire night and, like many pets, Dexter was nervous about loud noises.
After the much-loved dog collapsed, frantic Judith called Malcolm, who rushed home.
Dexter, a Labrador cross, initially belonged to the couple’s son Michael, but didn’t get along with their other dog, so he went to live with Judith and Malcolm.
He was also a dear friend of the couple’s two-year-old granddaughter, Liliah-Mae.
The couple adored their dog and worked around the beloved pet.
Judith works at Tesco in Coulby Newham and took the night shifts so that there would always be someone at home with Dexter.
He slept in bed with her during the day, alerting her when it was time to get up or have a parcel delivered.
