Disney theme parks will allow staff to have visible tattoos and wear costumes that include gender in a policy shift to become ‘more diverse and inclusive’.
Disney parks will allow staff to have visible tattoos and costumes that include gender
A post on President Josh D’Amaro’s company website said the new policies will help create “a place where everyone is welcome” and result in “richer and more personal” experiences for park visitors.
The post reads: “We are also looking at other traditions, including the policies that guide how cast members report to work.”
Moving forward, we believe our cast, who are at the center of the magic that lives in all of our experiences, can deliver the best of legendary Disney guest service when they have more options for self-expression, creating richer, more personal experiences. And more attractive with our guests.
“Disney has previously had pretty strict rules on how its workers would look like – staff weren’t even allowed to have beards until 2012, so this change to allow for ‘appropriate’ tattoos and gender-inclusive hairstyles is a big change for the company.”
Along with changes to how staff can dress and express themselves, D’Amaro also promised to make park attractions “more inclusive.” We celebrate the diverse and inspiring stories of our cast and fans with creator collaborations and exciting experiences, like The Soul of Jazz Exhibit at Walt Disney World Resort “.
D’Amaro ended the post saying that Disney still had ‘more to do’ to be more inclusive.
“This is just the beginning as we continue to work toward a world we all belong to, including more diverse and inclusive Disney Parks, Experiences and Products,” he wrote
