Delta flight disaster: Eyewitness recounts terrifying moments before crash
In a shocking incident that unfolded at Toronto Pearson International Airport, a Delta Air Lines flight experienced a catastrophic crash-landing, leaving passengers in a state of panic and chaos. John Nelson, one of the 80 fortunate survivors aboard Delta Flight 4819, shared his harrowing experience with CNN, providing a glimpse into the terrifying moments leading up to the aircraft’s emergency landing.

Unusual runway conditions

Nelson described the runways at the Canadian airport as being in a “weird condition” due to gusty winds and snow accumulation. He recalled that the flight, which originated from Minneapolis, seemed routine until the descent. “The winds were super gusty, and the snow had kinda blown over the runways,” he explained.

As the aircraft approached the runway, it became evident that something was amiss. “When we hit, it was super hard. We hit the ground and the plane went sideways,” he recounted, detailing the moment the plane skidded and flipped upside down.

Moments of chaos and fear

As the aircraft came to a stop, Nelson witnessed a terrifying sight: a massive fireball erupting from the left side of the plane. The chaos that ensued was overwhelming. “It was mass chaos… It’s an emotional rollercoaster that you go through, but it’s things you hope you don’t see again,” he said, reflecting on the panic that gripped the cabin.

Passengers scrambled to escape the wreckage, and Nelson emphasized the urgency of getting off the plane as quickly as possible. Just moments after they evacuated, another explosion rocked the aircraft, but thankfully, firefighters were able to respond swiftly.

The aftermath and investigation

Delta Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, took off from Minneapolis early in the morning and crashed shortly after noon. All 80 individuals on board, including 76 passengers and four crew members, managed to escape before the aircraft was engulfed in flames.

However, the incident left 18 people injured, with three in critical condition, including a child. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, as authorities work to determine how the Bombardier CRJ-900LR ended up on its back on the snowy tarmac of Canada’s largest city.

Footage from the scene captured the harrowing moments as firefighters emerged from the aircraft just seconds before a massive fireball erupted from the fuselage. This incident marks the first significant occurrence involving a commercial passenger jet since the tragic crash of an Army Black Hawk helicopter and American Airlines flight 5342 at Ronald Reagan National Airport earlier this year, which resulted in the loss of 67 lives.
