Explore how entertainment venues can be designed for sensory inclusivity.

In a world where entertainment often means loud music, cheering crowds, and high-energy events, the need for inclusivity has never been more crucial. The City of Medicine Hat is taking significant steps to ensure that everyone, including those with sensory sensitivities, can enjoy the excitement of live events.

This initiative is not just about comfort; it’s about creating a welcoming environment for all.

Understanding sensory sensitivities

Sensory sensitivities can affect a wide range of individuals, from children with autism to adults dealing with PTSD, dementia, or Alzheimer’s.

According to experts, one in four people experiences some form of sensory sensitivity, which can lead to discomfort in traditionally loud and bustling environments. Wendy Ebach, manager of service coordination with CORE Association, emphasizes that these sensitivities are real and can significantly impact daily life.

“If a person has that kind of a sensory issue, they can have difficulty processing it,” she explains. This can manifest in various ways, from physical pain to emotional distress.

Medicine Hat’s pioneering initiative

Recognizing the need for change, Medicine Hat has equipped Co-op Place, the home of the Tigers, with sensory-inclusive gear.

This includes sensory kits containing earmuffs, sunglasses, fidget items, and lap pads, designed to help individuals manage their sensory experiences. Additionally, a quiet room has been added to the venue, providing a safe space for those who may feel overwhelmed.

Trampas Brown, manager of guest experience and operations, notes that this is the first time in Alberta that an entertainment venue has received official certification for being sensory inclusive.

Empathy and community engagement

The initiative was inspired by a visit to the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas, where Brown observed their sensory-inclusive certifications.

“We looked into it and decided to bring the program to Medicine Hat,” he recalls. The goal is not to change the events themselves but to enhance the experience for those who may need additional support. This approach fosters a sense of community and understanding, breaking down barriers and reducing stigma around disabilities.

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the importance of inclusivity, Medicine Hat is setting a standard for other cities to follow. By prioritizing the needs of all individuals, including those with sensory sensitivities, the city is not only enhancing the entertainment experience but also promoting empathy and understanding within the community. In a time when the world could use a little more compassion, these efforts are a step in the right direction.
