Coroner confirms body discovered is Gabby Petito and cause of death is homicide

The FBI says a county coroner has confirmed that human remains found in remote northern Wyoming, next to the border of Grand Teton National Park, are those of 22-year-old Gabby Petito, who disappeared while on a cross-country – backcountry road trip with a boyfriend who is now being sought by Florida authorities.

Teton County Coroner Brent Blue ruled the manner of her death a homicide, but declined to release the cause of death pending final autopsy results, authorities said Tuesday.

Petito’s body was found Sunday near an undeveloped camping area that is surrounded by woods and brush, located about 30 miles northeast of Jackson, Wyoming.

The FBI also requested that anyone with information about boyfriend Brian Laundrie’s role in Petito’s death contact the agency.

Person of interest in the case

Laundrie, who was declared a person of interest in Petito’s case but not criminally charged, disappeared last week, prompting a massive manhunt in a sprawling Sarasota County nature preserve.

The young couple were caught on police body camera after they were stopped on reports of a possible domestic assault in Utah on Aug. 12.

The chilling footage showed a hysterical Petito telling police that the couple had fought that morning.

“I’m very severely OCD. I was apologizing to him telling him I’m sorry for being so cruel, ” Petito told the officer. “We’ve been fighting all morning. Before he wouldn’t let me in the car, he told me I had to calm down.”
