A fire in the small Alberta town of Irricana has left one home in ruins and another severely damaged, prompting an outpouring of community support. The blaze erupted early Saturday morning, around 5 a.m., leading to a swift response from local fire services.
Bill Wool from Rocky View Fire Services reported that crews from multiple nearby communities, including Balzac, Crossfield, and Airdrie, joined forces to combat the flames.

Firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control, allowing ATCO workers to safely shut off a ruptured natural gas line.
Greg Simpson, a resident living nearby, recounted how his mother-in-law initially mistook the crackling sounds of the fire for rain. Upon realizing the danger, they quickly called 911, but the fire had already spread, engulfing both homes. Fortunately, all residents managed to escape unharmed, a testament to the quick thinking of the community.
Community support shines through
In the wake of this tragedy, the spirit of community has shone brightly. Neighbors Holly and Emily MacCharles took the initiative to gather donations for the affected families. “We’re a community, so why not try and help out as best we can?” Holly expressed, highlighting the importance of solidarity in tough times.
By noon, they had collected a significant amount of clothing and food, with contributions coming from as far as Calgary, a 50-minute drive away.
Fundraising efforts underway
In addition to physical donations, the MacCharles sisters have launched a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising $50,000 to support the families.
As of Saturday afternoon, nearly $4,000 had already been raised. “We hope this will help them with a rental or something, so they have somewhere to go,” Holly added, emphasizing the urgency of providing immediate assistance. Fire crews remained on-site throughout Saturday to monitor for any remaining hotspots, while investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
The incident serves as a reminder of the resilience and compassion found within small communities. As the people of Irricana come together to support their neighbors, they demonstrate that even in the face of adversity, unity can prevail.
