A circus bear attacked its trainer in the city of Berezovsky, Kemerovo region, located in Russia. The woman tried to break away from the animal, but was unable to do so and two circus workers had to support her.
Circus bear lunges at its trainer in the middle of a children’s show
The bear attacked its trainer during a children’s show at the Harlequin Circus, Berezovsky, Kemerovo, where there were no barriers to protect the crowd from the animal. The event was captured on video and shared via social media.
The video shows how the animal, dressed in a hat and scarf, approaches the woman on stage while another circus worker was addressing the audience.
The bear attacked the trainer’s leg, while the spectators stayed from their seats.
The trainer tried to separate herself from the animal without success, until two men managed to drive the bear away. Shortly after, the act continued and the woman tried to make the animal jump through a hoop, but again it pounced on her.
After the attack, the circus denied that there had been any aggression on the part of the animal, despite the video. A spokesperson stated that “There was no incident” and justified the bear’s behavior by pointing out that “it is in mating season”.
Such incidents have intensified the debate in Russia on the use of animals in entertainment shows, as it is considered an act of cruelty, not to mention the risk to people attending the shows or those working in the circuses.
