‘Chucky’ star says Chucky doll felt “alive” when acting with him: ‘It’s actually kind of weird’
Arthur plays the title character, Jake Webber, in the TV series “Chucky,” which premiered Tuesday on USA and Syfy. The series is a sequel to the 2017 film “Cult of Chucky,” and the horror franchise’s original creator Don Mancini is returning to write all the episodes.
“You’d think you wouldn’t connect with the Chucky doll as much because he’s a robot, but he’s alive,” Arthur said.
“What they’re doing with this new doll is the same look but with new mechanics inside. He has a lot more expressions and it’s actually kind of strange the way he does it. And it’s almost like working with another actor.”
Arthur also revealed that the team put the voice of Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif on the speakers whenever the doll needed to speak.
“We heard him everywhere,” Arthur said. “It was like the room was talking, like the voice of God. He (Dourif) wasn’t there, but he was there spiritually.”
Arthur’s co-star, Alyvia Alyn Lind, also said she was amazed by the realism of the Chucky doll.
She told the panel, “Chucky is obviously iconic. It’s crazy to see how real the Chucky doll is. You don’t feel like you’re working with a doll at all.”
“There’s an incredible team of puppeteers who are into every move the doll makes,” Lind continued. “Every raised eyebrow, every blink, every movement and it really brings it to life. You have to remind yourself that you’re standing in front of an iconic figure.” ”
Arthur wasn’t such a fan of the doll.
“The doll is really very strange,” the young actor admitted in the roundtable interview. “Seeing everyone working on it doesn’t make it any easier.”
