In a bizarre turn of events, the North Vancouver RCMP recently intervened in an attempted cheese theft that unfolded in the early hours of September 29. Officers on proactive patrol stumbled upon a cart filled with cheese near East 13th Street, only to witness a man fleeing the scene upon their arrival.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of crime prevention in urban areas and the innovative approaches law enforcement is employing to combat them.

Late-night patrols and proactive policing

At approximately 4 a.m., while conducting routine patrols, the officers noticed the suspicious cart.

As they approached, a man emerged from a nearby stairwell connected to a Whole Foods store and made a hasty escape. Despite the officers’ attempts to apprehend him, he managed to evade capture. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the suspect had broken into the Whole Foods and was in the act of stealing cheese valued at an astonishing $12,800.

The value of intelligence-led policing

Constable Mansoor Sahak, a media relations officer for the North Vancouver RCMP, emphasized the importance of proactive measures in crime prevention. “People often ask what our officers do when they are not directly responding to active service calls,” he stated.

“Our response to them, as shown by the work of these officers, is that we are often proactively patrolling high crime areas to prevent and deter crime from occurring.” This incident serves as a prime example of intelligence-led policing, where crime analysts provide valuable insights that guide officers in their patrols.

Community involvement in crime prevention

In light of this incident, the North Vancouver RCMP has released CCTV footage of the suspect in hopes that community members can assist in identifying him. They urge anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the role of the public in maintaining safety and security.

“Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 and quote file #2024-19909,” the RCMP stated. For those who prefer to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers can be contacted at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This incident not only underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in urban settings but also highlights the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in preventing crime.
