The shocking thefts

In a distressing turn of events, two Calgary residents, Matt Thomas and Heath McCoy, have found themselves grappling with the emotional fallout of theft. Over the holiday season, their storage lockers were broken into, leaving them to confront the loss of cherished possessions.

Thomas, who regularly checks on his locker, was met with chaos when he discovered that someone had pried open the trim holding the lock. Despite the lock remaining intact, the contents of his locker were strewn everywhere, leading to a gut-wrenching realization of what was lost.

Among the items taken were retired Lego sets, watches, computer monitors, and a collection of childhood comic books. Thomas estimates the total value of his losses to be around $8,000, a staggering amount that reflects not just monetary worth but deep sentimental value.

A collector’s nightmare

Heath McCoy’s experience mirrored Thomas’s in its emotional toll. Storing his own collection of comic books, McCoy was devastated to find that his locker had been targeted on December 23. He suspects the thief was in and out in a matter of minutes, indicating a random act of theft rather than a targeted attack.

The thief cut the latch and made off with three boxes of comics, including rare issues of Batman and Captain Britain, valued at approximately $5,000.

McCoy expressed his frustration, stating, “It’s just a dirty thing to do.” The loss of these comics is not just financial; they hold irreplaceable sentimental value for him, making the theft even more painful.

As he continues to document the stolen items for his insurance claim, McCoy’s desire remains clear: he would rather have his comics back than any monetary compensation.

Security concerns and community response

In light of these incidents, Global News reached out to Sentinel Storage for a statement regarding the thefts.

The company emphasized that the security of their facilities and clients is their top priority. While they could not disclose specific details due to privacy concerns and an ongoing investigation, they assured the public that they are cooperating fully with local law enforcement.

The community’s response to these thefts has been one of solidarity, with many expressing outrage over the violation of personal space and trust. As investigations continue, both Thomas and McCoy hope for answers and, ideally, the return of their stolen items. The emotional impact of such thefts extends beyond the loss of property; it disrupts the sense of security that individuals expect when storing their belongings.
