On a vibrant Tuesday, the people of British Columbia showcased their unwavering spirit of giving during the annual CKNW Pledge Day. This year, the event proved to be a remarkable success, raising over $2.57 million for the CKNW Kids’ Fund. The radiothon, which has become a staple in the community, kept operators busy as listeners dialed in to contribute to this noble cause.

Continuing the tradition of generosity

The impressive total was recorded by the end of the on-air fundraising segment at 6 p.m., but the opportunity to donate remained open online until midnight. Kathryn Stewart, the director of talk and talent at 980 CKNW and a board member of the Kids’ Fund, expressed her gratitude, stating, “We are so grateful for the generosity of this community and our listeners.” This year marks the 47th annual Pledge Day, a testament to the enduring commitment of British Columbians to support children in need.

A legacy of support for children

The CKNW Kids’ Fund, originally launched in 1944 as the CKNW Orphans’ Fund, has evolved significantly over the past 80 years. Initially aimed at providing gifts for children at the Loyal Protestant Home orphanage in New Westminster, the charity’s mission has expanded to support children facing various physical, mental, and social challenges across the province. Donations to the fund now cover a wide range of needs, including mobility aids, medical equipment, therapies, educational support, and even summer camps.
