Bride died at her own wedding and her sister marries groom
A bride died at her own wedding while her sister stepped in and married her deceased sister’s groom at the same ceremony.
The original bride, named Surbhi by her family, suffered a heart attack during the event in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, according to local reports.
A doctor arrived from a nearby village, but was unable to save her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Instead of ending the celebrations, both families decided to have her replaced by her younger sister, Nisha, as her wife.
When the celebrations resumed, Surbhi’s body was in an adjacent room.
Surbhi’s brother Saurabh told Mailonline, “It is hard to believe that a dead body was in the other room and a bride was being prepared in the adjoining room.”
“We didn’t know what to do in that situation,” he said in a separate statement on the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS).
“Both families sat together and someone suggested that my younger sister, Nisha, marry the groom. The families discussed the matter and both agreed.”
Her uncle, Ajab Singh, said it had been a “difficult decision. The pain of her death and the happiness of the wedding have yet to sink in.” Her uncle went on to say.
The bride’s mother, Guddi Devi, asked that the wedding continue even after her daughter’s death. According to her son Gaurav, who says she was suffering after the tragedy.
“Mom is suffering a lot, she calls Surbhi every day, as she was our elder sister. She dreamt of making her life a wonder. May she have peace in her soul.” Commented her son Gaurav.
