Authorities searched for more than a month for Laundrie, who was the only person of interest in the disappearance and murder of his partner, until they found his remains on Oct. 20 in a Florida nature preserve.

“Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide,” the family’s attorney, Steven Bertolino, said in a press release.

A couple’s journey that culminated in a homicide

Petito and Laundrie decided to take a trip to different natural parks in the United States, but the story culminated with both young people dead.

The couple gained followers on social media during their trip in a Ford Transit van with videos full of happy scenes, which may have hidden deeper problems.

Petito’s body was found Sept. 19 in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park, which the couple had visited. Forensic experts later determined that it was a homicide and that the young woman was strangled to death.

Authorities said the body had been there for about a month.

Meanwhile, Laundrie’s skeletal remains were positively identified in late October using dental records. The find concluded a massive search involving federal, state and local authorities that focused primarily on the Carlton Reserve nature park near Laundrie’s home. It is a swampy, heavily wooded area that is home to alligators, coyotes, bobcats, snakes and many other creatures.

The operation began shortly after Laundrie went missing on Sept. 14, two weeks after the 23-year-old returned alone to his parents’ home in North Port, Fla.
