Boys armed with AK-47s engage in a shootout with police
Unfortunately, there have been so many incidents of gun violence this year that it’s hard to be surprised by new incidents, but a shooting in Volusia County, Florida, is especially surprising because the shooters were just children.
Police say the children had left a nearby children’s home.
The boy was unharmed, but the girl was shot and is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries and is now stable.
In the body camera video, which has just been made public, police can be heard trying to calm the situation.
One officer is heard, “Let these guys not shoot, man, let’s wait, let’s take time.” Another officer says, “Let’s not escalate yet.”
CBS Partners in Orlando writes, “Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said his officers showed great restraint by not returning fire initially.”
Chitwood said,” They took several turns.
And I know for a fact that a banana magazine was empty from the AK–47. I know from radio transmissions that a 12-year-old boy opened up on us.”
“I know the 14-year-old boy opened fire on us with a shotgun and then came out and threatened one of my sergeants and told him he was going to kill him.”
“But after he came out of the garage, there was nothing left for us to do.”
This police body camera footage shows a disturbing scene in Central Florida — where the Volusia County Sheriff says a standoff happened between an allegedly armed 14-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy and officers.
