Boy saved father and sister after swimming for an hour for help
A 7-year-old boy swam for an hour, sometimes floating on his back to keep from getting married and screamed for help at the first house he saw to save his father and 4-year-old sister after a boat accident on the St.
Johns River in the North Florida city of Jacksonville.
Local media reported Monday the heroic journey of Chase Poust, who had to swim against the current to save himself and his family.
The minor’s father, Steven Poust, told reporters that he had anchored his boat in the water last Friday while fishing, and his children swam around him.
Chase said his sister Abigail, who was wearing a life jacket while in the water, got loose because of a strong current coming from the boat, and he got loose to go after her, but the current began to pull her under.
Her father jumped in to save her, and told Chase to try to swim against the current to swim to shore.
Chase kept swimming until she reached shore and explained that she swam doggie-style and then floated on her back so she wouldn’t get tired.
“I told them both that I loved them because I wasn’t sure what would happen at that point,” the father said, as his voice cracked.
The boy said that once he reached the shore, he ran to the nearest house to call for help.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, the Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have helped save this family.
“I screamed for help at the top of my lungs,” Poust said.
Authorities say neither Chase nor his father were required to wear a life jacket because the law applies to children under 6 years old for a case like the one they were in.
