Vanessa Low, the Australian Paralympian after securing the winner’s medal in the women’s class 63 long jump event, the German-born Australian decided it was time to inscribe her name in the history books once again by setting another world record with her remaining jumps.
Australian Paralympian Vanessa Low breaks three world records in just one hour
Vanessa Low has broken her own world record not once, not twice, but three times to claim Paralympic gold in Tokyo. She had already broken her own record earlier in the evening, but deep down she knew she could beat it.
On his final attempt of the night, Low jumped a remarkable distance of 5.28 meters, having previously recorded 5.16 and 5.20 meters. Incredibly, that last jump beat the next best competitor, silver medalist Martina Caironi, by 14 cm.
In total, she broke the record on three separate occasions, all within the space of an hour.
And if her feat wasn’t impressive enough, it turns out she was also suffering from concussion symptoms during the Games, following a heavy fall back home on Australian shores. “This is very special,” Low told Channel 7 after the event.
“I know Rio was my first gold, but to be able to do this experience alongside my husband and to be able to do it that day with Scott (Reardon) by my side, having a familiar face in the crowd, was very special and I’m very grateful for this opportunity.”
Low, who is a double amputee after being hit by a train when she was younger, used to compete for Germany. In fact, she won her first Paralympic gold medal for the country at the Rio Games in 2016.
However, the 31-year-old athlete has swapped the black and white colors of Germany for the green and gold of Australia after becoming an Australian citizen thanks to her marriage to fellow Paralympian Scott Reardon.
