The Coast Guard has said that most of the passengers on the Italian-flagged Euroferry Olympia have been rescued and disembarked at Cofu, where several ambulances were waiting.
The company that owns the ship said that 153 trucks and trailers, as well as 32 passenger cars were also on board, according to information from the newspaper ‘Kathimerini’. One of the passengers has applauded the “quick action” of the crew, who are said to have saved the lives of most of the passengers.
The ship had departed from Igoumenitsa, the largest port in western Greece, and was bound for the Italian city of Brindisi. The fire, the causes of which are unknown, started when the vessel was sailing near Corfu.
