In wars it is the innocent who lose the most. In the one that Russia has provoked against Ukraine, the government of Volodymir Zelenski has admitted the death of 350 people, including 16 children. The image of a little girl in unicorn pajamas at the hands of the doctors who tried to save her – without succeeding – has become a symbol of horror.

Already 16 Ukrainian children have been killed in the war provoked by Russia five days ago. Among these innocent victims is the little girl in unicorn pajamas from Mariupol, just six years old, who died after a bomb hit her home.

The image of the medics unsuccessfully trying to save her has traveled halfway around the world. One of the doctors trying to save her life at one point turns to the press photographer and says, “Show this to Putin.”

The girl in the unicorn pajamas is seen in the ambulance as a woman, presumed to be her mother, covers her mouth with her hand full of blood and is wearing her scarf and slippers.

Another girl shot dead while traveling with family in car

Kiev Deputy Mayor Vladimir Bondarenko has shared the story of another girl named Polina, aged about 10, who was also killed in Ukraine while trying to escape the war.

The girl was traveling in a car with her family when they were shot at by Russian troops, according to Ukrainian authorities.

She and her parents have been killed, according to the BBC. Her older brother and sister have been taken to a hospital, where they remain in intensive care.

In addition to the children killed in Russia’s war against Ukraine, 45 other children have been injured.
