An American Airlines passenger opened the plane’s emergency exit door shortly after the plane landed at Miami International Airport and jumped onto the wing, officials said.

“While disembarking in Miami, a customer on American Airlines Flight 920 with service from Cali, Colombia (CLO) to MIA exited the aircraft through an emergency exit,” the airline said in a statement.

Miami-Dade police said the passenger, who has not been identified, was detained by U.S.

Customs and Border Protection following Wednesday’s incident.

The passenger was detained but required medical attention when he arrived at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remained Thursday, Detective Argemis Colome told NBC News.

His name was not released.

“We thank our team members and law enforcement for their professionalism and quick action,” American said in the statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration has reported “a troubling increase” in unruly behavior on planes. There have been nearly 4,500 reports of unruly passengers since the beginning of the year.

In a normal year, the transportation agency sees between 100 and 150 formal cases of passenger misbehavior.

Police said all other passengers were able to disembark without any problems and that the incident did not cause delays.

An American Airlines spokesman said, “We are aware of an incident involving a passenger on American Airlines Flight 920 from Cali, Colombia (CLO) to Miami (MIA).

“As customers were exiting the aircraft through the gate, a passenger opened the wing emergency exit and jumped onto the ramp. The customer was immediately detained by law enforcement.
