Fear in Miami, wherein the night between Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 June 2021 an 11 floors building collapsed. Present on site dozens of rescue teams is assessing the extent of damage and looking for any people trapped under the rubble.
A building collapsed in Miami
For the moment it is not yet known what could have caused the collapse of the building, located at the intersection of 88th Street and Collins Avenue in Surfside. The building, part of the Champlain Towers complex, houses 136 apartments and is one block north of the Miami Beach city limits.
Photos and videos of the incident overnight were posted on social media in which you can see a large section of the building collapsed into a pile of rubble.
Some witnesses, on Twitter, said they heard a loud roar before the building collapsed.
A building collapsed in Miami: they fear victims
Immediate call to the rescuers who intervened with over 80 units including technical rescue teams and firefighters, evacuated residents of some buildings near the one affected, and are working to understand if there are people trapped under the rubble.
Officials have not provided any comment on the incident but one firefighter reportedly said there were casualties. It is not yet known how many people were present at the time of the collapse. Some people managed to escape and save themselves and rescuers found them gathered on the sidewalk.
A building collapsed in Miami: isolated area
The area around 80th Street was closed for several blocks to allow dozens of fire trucks and rescue vehicles to respond. “Over 80 MDFR units are on the scene with assistance from municipal fire departments,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said on Twitter.
