After a tough battle with cancer, the Obamas’ former top dog Bo has died
“He was exactly what we needed and more than we expected,” Barack Obama tweeted in a tribute.
Barack and Michelle Obama announced Saturday the death of their first family pet, Bo, after the 12-year-old Portuguese dog found himself in a battle with cancer.
On Twitter, the former president wrote: “Today our family lost a true friend and loyal companion. For more than a decade, Bo was a constant and kind presence in our lives.”
The resident White House pup during Obama’s two presidential terms, he was a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy to Sasha and Malia Obama in 2009.
“He tolerated all the ruckus that being in the White House entailed, barked a lot but didn’t bite.”
“She loved to lie in the water in the summer, was unflappable with the kids, lived for leftovers at the dinner table and had great hair,” Obama wrote.
“He was exactly what we needed and more than we expected. He will be greatly missed,” he added.

Known for his unmistakable black fur and white chest, Bo – sometimes referred to as the “first dog” – proved popular and made official appearances alongside the first family.
Bo was later joined by a little sister of the same breed, Sunny, in 2013.
On Instagram, former first lady Michelle Obama shared that Bo had cancer. She reflected on her life and the role she played within the family.
“Bo was supposed to be a companion for the girls. We had no idea how much he was going to mean to all of us,” she wrote in her caption.
