Woman gives birth to newborn twins after dangerous caesarean section
A woman in Mali had nine babies in a single delivery, although only seven were expected, according to the African country’s health minister and the clinic in Morocco where the twins were born.
It is the first time, on record, that a woman has had nine babies at the same time and they all survive.
“The five girls, four boys and the mother are doing well,” Mali’s health minister said in a statement.
The 25-year-old woman, who was identified as Halima Cisse, delivered the babies on Tuesday after a delightful Caesarean section in Morocco after being sent there for special care, the top health official announced, Mali.
The babies were photographed as they were taken feet and hands out of incubators at the private Ain Borja clinic in Casablanca.
Medical staff regularly monitor their condition in the center’s neonatal extension.
No one at the hospital was expecting the nine babies, said Casablanca clinic director Youssef Alaoui.
Cisse gave birth prematurely at 30 weeks and is now stable after heavy bleeding for which she received a blood transfusion, he said.
The Guinness Book of World Records said in an email to the Associated Press on Wednesday that the current data set is the largest birth with all live babies, and verifies the birth in Morocco.
