Authorities have only released the name of the alleged shooter, Daniel Leyden, and have not specified the gender of the victim, who was part of a uniformed patrol from District Three of the county.

The case is being investigated as a murder-suicide, said the St. John’s County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office, which includes the historic tourist city of St. Augustine, founded by Spaniards in 1565 and the oldest city in the U.S. today.

Leyden worked as a detective in the Criminalistic Investigations Division and he and his partner had gone on vacation with other officers from Hillsborough County.

The police report indicates that on Saturday night the other occupants of the house heard the two officers arguing in the bedroom and then shots were heard.

When police entered the room they found the two dead.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister called it an “unthinkable tragedy” and expressed his condolences to the families of both officers and the entire law enforcement “family.”
