A man is attacked by a bear in Alaska and remains in surgery for more than four hours
The attack left Allen Minish, 61, with a broken jaw, a puncture mark on his scalp, wounds and many prints after a four-and-a-half hour operation.
“I saw him and he saw me at the same time. It was scary stuff.” commented the victim.
Allen Minish was alone in an isolated, wooded area of Alaska surveying land for a real estate agency.
Suddenly, the 61-year-old looked up and saw a large grizzly bear just 10 meters away from him.
The attack left Minish with a crushed jaw, a puncture wound in his scalp – so deep that the doctor told him he could see bone – injuries and many stitches after a four-and-a-half-hour operation.
He is also wearing a patch over his right eye, which will continue to be closely monitored by doctors.
It all happened in a very brief encounter. Minish estimates that the attack lasted at least 10 seconds.
The man first tried to dodge it by positioning himself behind some small fir trees.
But this did not stop the bear, which ran through them.
As the bear approached, Minish lifted the broad end of the device with which he held the ground, and pressed it toward the bear, to put it away.
The bear simply tossed it aside and with his power, knocked Minish to the ground.
“When he got on top of me, I grabbed his lower jaw to pull him away,” Minish said, also noting that this resulted in a hand wound. But he threw me aside and grabbed a quarter of my face,” he continued.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game says this is rarely seen and advises people to avoid catching the animals traveling in groups or making noise.
