A man beat his wife in broad daylight, while bystanders simply looked on

Emre Derebaşı, a janitorial worker, was on his usual shift when he saw a scene unfolding on the street that left him in disbelief. A violent assault appeared to be taking place right in front of him.

It appeared that a man was brutally beating his helpless wife with a gun, as she could only lie on the street while the blows were being thrown.

Surveillance cameras captured the argument between a man and a woman as it escalated. Suddenly, the man began to lash out physically, hitting the defenseless woman with rolled-up papers he was holding in his right hand.

Using the improvised weapon, he hit her again and again until she fell to the ground.

Initially, it appeared that no one was going to intervene on the woman’s behalf. As she sat helplessly on the street, no doubt pleading with her attacker to stop, the helpless woman covered her face with her hands as the abuse continued.

Before the abuser knew what hit him, the unlikely hero launched a flying headbutt, giving the man a dose of his own medicine.

Hitting him with full force, Emre collided with the man, who was later identified by Hürriyet, one of Turkey’s largest newspapers, only as Mehmet T.

While watching the man hit the woman is quite distressing, Emre taking flight makes the footage worthwhile.

After landing his brutal headbutt, Emre pinned Mehmet to the ground as bystanders rushed to the scene, where they held him until police arrived.

Mehmet was arrested, but things were far from over, especially for Emre. Although witnesses are clear about what they saw, Mehmet, the husband who assaulted his wife, was released, while Emre, the man who intervened, is in legal trouble.
