A grandstand collapsed after the final whistle of a Dutch soccer match on Sunday as Vitesse Arnhem fans celebrated their team’s 1-0 win over NEC Nijmegen in the Eredivisie.
A group of soccer fans celebrated so loudly and boisterously that part of the stadium collapsed beneath them
The Vitesse fans were jumping up and down to celebrate when the area they were occupying inside the Goffertstadion in Nijmegen collapsed.
A group of about 35 fans in the central part of the stand collapsed when the stand gave way, but fortunately no one was injured.
Hubert Bruls, the mayor of Nijmegen, called for an immediate investigation and said he was “very shocked by what happened.”
“Fortunately, as far as is known, no one was hurt,” Bruls told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “I want an investigation into what happened as soon as possible.”
The Dutch soccer federation, KNVB, said, “A stadium that should be safe collapses. This must be investigated.”
Baden Fredriksen scored the only goal of the game in the 16th minute, and Vitesse’s win moved them up to sixth place in the Dutch top flight.
