A girl was fatally shot in the head Monday night, the third child to be shot in the last three weeks in Minneapolis.
A girl was shot in the head Monday night in Minneapolis and killed
The Minneapolis Police Department says the shooting occurred shortly after 11 am. In the 3500 block of Penn Avenue north in the aftermath of Folwell.
The girl was riding in a car when she was shot. The driver immediately took the girl to Hennepin Healthcare.
Family members informed WCCO Wednesday morning that the girl, whose name was Aniya, died.
Local peace activist KG Wilson says the girl injured in the overnight shooting is his granddaughter. She was riding in her family’s car as she and her mother were returning from McDonald’s when bullets began flying outside their north Minneapolis home.
One of the bullets struck Aniya in the head. Her mother took her daughter to the trauma center after she was shot.
On Tuesday, Aniya was breathing on a ventilator and had signs of brain swelling.
Her mother described her daughter as a girl full of life, adding that she liked unicorns and loved to make people smile.
The victim’s mother would never have thought she would have to deal with so much pain, but says she also feared given the number of children who have been raped with guns in Minneapolis this year.
Aniya’s aunt has set up a Gofundme to help the family.
Aniya is the third child to be shot in Minneapolis in the past three weeks, all of them shot in the head.
So far this year, at least 185 people have been shot in Minneapolis. That’s nearly 150% more than this time last year.
