In the heart of Calgary, a remarkable holiday tradition is unfolding as a family celebrates the legacy of a spruce tree planted by their daughter three decades ago. The tree, which has stood proudly in their backyard since 1994, is now set to be adorned with over 1,400 lights in front of the McDougall Centre, bringing joy and festive spirit to the downtown area.
A cherished memory
Daniel Langer, who was just two years old when the tree was planted, reflects on its significance for his family. “This was planted in 1994,” he recalls. “I don’t remember it being planted, but that’s when my sister got this tree from Grade 3. We planted it in our backyard, and it’s been here ever since.” The tree has become a symbol of family memories and holiday cheer, representing a connection to their past.
From backyard to downtown
The journey of this beloved spruce tree took a special turn when city crews carefully cut it down and transported it to its new location. Using a crane, the tree was loaded onto a flatdeck, ready to take its place in the festive celebrations. According to Langer, this transition is inspired by a heartwarming story from Tennessee Ernie Ford, which suggests that every tree planted aspires to become a Christmas tree. “So this tree my sister was given gets a chance to be a Christmas tree that every tree deserves to be,” he explains.
Lighting up the holidays
The official unveiling of the tree will take place on Thursday, with city crews working diligently to ensure it is beautifully decorated. The Langer family is excited to see their tree transformed into a beacon of holiday spirit, illuminating the downtown area and bringing smiles to the faces of passersby. As the lights twinkle against the backdrop of the Calgary skyline, the tree serves as a reminder of the joy and warmth of the holiday season.
As the Langer family prepares to say goodbye to their backyard spruce, they have plans to plant a fruit tree in its place come spring. This decision reflects their commitment to nurturing new memories while honoring the legacy of the tree that has brought them so much joy over the years.
