School security officers assigned to Automotive High School on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg grabbed the boy after the .38-caliber handgun was detected during a search of his backpack around 8:30 a.m., police said.

The teen was taken into custody without incident, authorities said.

Charges against him were pending.

“School security officers recovered this item quickly and safely during evaluations, ensuring that all students and staff are safe,” said city Department of Education spokesman Nathaniel Styer. “All protocols were followed and we are working closely with the NYPD regarding follow-up actions.”

Thursday’s arrest is the ninth time a weapon has been seized at a city school since July.

From July 1 through the end of last week, eight guns were seized in the city at public schools, compared with one gun found during the same period in 2019 and two guns found during the same period 2018, according to NYPD data.

Five students were caught with guns in Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn during just two days last week. Two of those weapons were detected by a metal detector, one was discovered during a fight and two others were reported by other students.

Police made arrests in all five cases.

A 16-year-old was arrested earlier this week for allegedly shooting a classmate during a dispute outside Midwood High School in Brooklyn.
