Luckily, both the 9-year-old girl who was driving and her 4-year-old sister were unharmed, according to police.

The girls left their home in West Jordan, Utah, and apparently intended to go to the beach, said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

“I guess they intended to start their summer vacation a little early,” Vainuku said.

At the house, the 9-year-old girl driving the car got on Bangerter Highway and headed north. They exited Bangerter onto eastbound State Route 201.

Eventually, the car the girls were in collided with a truck, Vainuku said. The truck driver didn’t realize there was a girl behind the wheel.

The driver of the semitrailer later told investigators that he thought the girls’ car was speeding, and even saw it making strange maneuvers, thought the driver was under the influence of alcohol and that may be why he didn’t brake.

The vehicle’s airbag deployed for the driver, who in this case was the 9-year-old girl, but not for her 4-year-old sister. Both girls were wearing seat belts and were not injured.

The girls‘ parents had no idea why they left and did not realize the situation until the next morning when they received a call from the police.
